Staying Cool and Safe During the Summer Months

Staying Cool and Safe During the Summer Months

Summer in Bolton and Chorley can be a wonderful time of year, but warmer weather also brings particular risks for older people and those living with long-term conditions. Dehydration, overheating and disturbed sleep can all develop quickly, and they are not always easy to spot. A little planning makes a big difference.

Keep hydration simple and regular

Many people drink less as they get older, often because the sense of thirst fades. Rather than relying on large drinks, our carers encourage small amounts often — a glass with every visit, water-rich foods like melon and cucumber, and favourite drinks kept within easy reach.

Where someone finds plain water unappealing, squash, herbal teas and diluted fruit juice all count. The aim is steady fluid through the day, not a single big effort.

Cool homes and comfortable routines

Closing curtains on the sunny side of the house during the day, opening windows in the cooler morning and evening, and using fans to move air all help keep rooms comfortable. Lightweight bedding and breathable clothing make sleep easier on warmer nights.

We also keep an eye on medication, as some prescriptions can increase sensitivity to heat or affect hydration. If anything gives cause for concern, we raise it with the family and, where needed, the GP.

How we can help

Our carers are trained to recognise the early signs of heat-related illness and to act calmly and quickly. If you would like to talk about support for a loved one this summer, our team is always happy to help — there is no obligation, just a friendly conversation about what would make life easier.
